Soot
Black carbon residue produced by incomplete combustion.
Back to Glossary
Definition
Soot is a black, powdery or flaky substance consisting largely of amorphous carbon, produced by the incomplete burning of organic matter. During a fire, soot particles become airborne and settle on surfaces throughout the property. Soot is acidic and can cause permanent damage to surfaces if not cleaned promptly. Different types include dry soot (from paper and wood fires), wet/sticky soot (from petroleum-based fires), and protein soot (from kitchen fires). Each type requires different cleaning approaches.
