Definition

A biohazard (biological hazard) refers to biological substances that pose a threat to human health. In restoration, biohazards include sewage, blood and bodily fluids, animal waste, and decomposing organic matter. Biohazard cleanup requires specialized training, personal protective equipment, and EPA-registered disinfectants. Restoration technicians must follow OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards and proper disposal procedures. Category 3 water damage and trauma/crime scene cleanup both involve biohazard considerations.
